“God Has Been Kind, Now I Am Cancer Free”– Rishi Kapoor Finally Opens Up About His Battle With Cancer

Rishi Kapoor chose to keep the details of his illness private and didn’t disclose the details until recently when his good friend and director Rahul Raiwal posted an update about his health saying he is cancer-free. The senior actor now has come out to talk about his battle with cancer and how supportive his family was throughout this phase.

In a talk with Deccan Chronicle, Rishi opened up about the details of his treatment in New York and shared:

My eighth month of treatment started on May 1 in the US. But God has been kind! I am in remission, meaning now I am cancer-free. I will have to do a bone-marrow transplant which in all probability should take another two months minimum. Being in remission is a big thing and it’s all because of my family and my fans prayers and duas that have worked. I thank them all.

From all the pictures we have been seeing on Instagram of Rishi ji with his family and friends, the one person who has always been by his side is wife – Neetu Kapoor. She has been smiling through it all and has been handling the difficult times with such strength and grace.

Here’s what he had to say about Neetu’s huge part in his recovery:

Neetu has stood by me like a rock. Otherwise, I am too difficult a person to handle as far as food and drink are concerned. (laughs)

They say a crisis is a way for families to grow closer. The Kapoor family is no different, as they have all grown closer to each other, especially Rishi ji and his children – Ranbir Kapoor and Ridhhima Kapoor Sahni.

Talking about them, here’s what he had to say:

My kids Ranbir and Ridhima have really shouldered my problems.

Ranbir and his father’s relationship has experienced a few ups and downs in the past. But, he has been spending a lot of time with his father in the US and they have grown very close to each other.

This picture posted by mum, Neetu, is proof of it:

How sweet, right?! We can’t wait to see Rishi ji back in great health and in the movies again!

Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan is an actress who has been prominent in the Tamil, Telegu and Hindi film industries and has juggled all three industries at once rather successfully. Coming from a family where both her parents – Kamal Haasan and Sarika – are accomplished actors in their own right, she had huge names and reputations to shoulder. She has won Filmfare Awards for her debut performances in Tamil and Telegu and has gone on to star in some critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like 7aum Arivu in Tamil, to Srimanthudu in Telegu to Gabbar is Back and D-day in Hindi. But, when it came to her one core passion in life, it was always music for Shruti. Having taken a break from acting for a while, Shruti concentrated on writing songs, producing music with artists in the UK and even performed live a few times on stage there. We caught up with the singer and actress and discussed her album, her love for live performances, her thoughts about the independent music scene in India and much more.

Excerpts:

Back in 2015 while interacting with your fans, you had mentioned about releasing your international album soon. It is finally happening, how would you sum up what you’re feeling?

Yes in 2015, 3 years ago. So I had started thinking about it then but it has taken a while. Also, I have to agree, this is exactly how I wanted it to be and it is with all the people I wanted to work with. I feel like it’s been 20 years in the making, so it is a super exciting thing for me.

Not that we don’t have singles and albums by singers here in India, but in Hollywood, it’s on a bigger scale and standalone from films. For a singer, that is the kind of exposure that will give their talent more recognition, do you agree?

Yes, I agree with you. We do have singers in India, we do have an alternate stream apart from Bollywood music, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near where it is supposed to be. I remember in the ’90s, independent music which was separate from film music, was big. You had huge stars like Lucky AliAlisha and Anaida (of Parvaneh fame), people who were probably better than a lot of film music. But, somewhere along the way it just got diluted and kind of vanished into thin air. As for me working on my English album, it was because of the fact that though I speak Hindi, Tamil and Telegu, I feel like I can express myself better in English. So where does that put an artist like me where do I get to express myself best? Because I find it easiest to communicate in English, I decided to go to London to make music with artists there, and there were no strategic reasons to it other than that, and it was not because I wanted to gain recognition of any sort. Having said that, India is so globalised and we have a huge percentage of the population that listens to English music here, so I’m just happy to have it reach everywhere.

As a musician, performing live and watching the reactions of your fans live is like the biggest high. How much do you enjoy live performances?

I think I have enjoyed being behind the screens and the camera, rehearsing with the musicians where we are three to five people in the room bouncing energies off of each other which is an amazing experience. And then you take that to your audience and see the fruits of your effort or not…which has not happened so far, Thank God! But, I feel the important thing is that you know you get the instant sense of energy from your audiences when you are on stage, you know which direction you are going in, whether it’s right or wrong, whether you are feeling enough, you know? Because only if you are, your audiences will also reciprocate. I loved that in all my performances in London, I have had like completely varied audiences, completely non-Indian audiences who have probably never heard a brown girl sing in English. It is really a lot of fun to perform live and it is probably my favourite thing to do.

Can you tell us something about your album?

So my album is very autobiographical, it is very internal and intimate and feminine in its energy, not in a girly way but in an unafraid, unabashed sense. It is an expression of the women of my age and what we are feeling, and I want to put that across. It has some songs that I had written long before, which I have restructured to how I feel now and there is stuff that we have created completely from scratch with my co-writers and other two musicians. All of it is my melodies and lyrics which is something that I am really happy about because it is so personal you know, putting it across in music in the same way I worded it in my head so it feels authentic to me. I have never thought about being liked by people or making my music sound a certain way to get more people to like it because that is just not worth it at the end of the day. We have all loved the stories behind the musicians we look up to, and that sense of soul is what I try to keep in my music as well.

How did you decide about the kind of emotions and feel the album will have?

So from the very beginning, I was very clear in my head that I wanted to talk about the internal dichotomies – the meaning of which has many layers to it. It can be about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a person in a struggle with themselves, what it feels like when one personality is trying to dominate the other within yourself. I have also explored what it means to me to be from another race, to be mixing in the world of colour and gender. Also, about where I come from, and I don’t mean India but like what fame has meant to me, what art has meant to me and my family. None of the songs is whiny because fortunately, by this age, I have stopped whining. The music is more reflective and more pensive with a lot about good memories.

Have you had any crazy fan experiences during your gigs?

So I have had crazy fan experiences in India when we have gigged. Actually, it was really beautiful…it wasn’t crazy. In London, at Troubadour, I was really scared that the audiences might ask us to sing a Hindi or a Tamil song but they did not. They were so loving and accepting and they were like, “You do your thing, honey,” and that was great. So, there was one song that I had written in English, but the chorus of four words is in Tamil because it goes with the concept and feels authentic to the song. There was this lovely lady in the audience who was listening with so much interest and had like this proud mum face for the first 3-4 songs. Finally, when I came to the song I mentioned, and she heard the Tamil bit, I saw her crying! It may be because she suddenly heard her mother tongue after so long in a foreign country, but to think I must have moved her was amazing. I met her afterwards and she was really sweet. I felt that was a crazy moment for me because as a musician you live to move with what moved you.

You have been very selective about your projects in Bollywood. Are there specific roles that you want to play in your career?

I don’t think I have been selective on purpose. I may look like an extremely picky person on the outside,  but the truth is that I have been balancing three careers between Tamil, Telegu and Hindi. I also do feel that sometimes, content-wise, I feel drawn towards content that is not necessarily in Hindi, not to mention the fact that I come from a more multi-cultural background and have grown up with many languages at home. For me, it is kind of about being a nomad actor more than being picky. Having said that, after being in the business for 10 years now, and taking this break now, I have realised I only want to commit myself to things I really wanted to do and am a 100% passionate about. In Hindi films too, there have been films that I really enjoyed working on, like D-Day and Behen Hogi Teri. But there also films that I did not enjoy because beyond a point it was not resonating with me and I felt like it was not fair to me or to the film. So in that case, if I am choosy, I’d rather be choosy than do something that I am not really committed to.

Adah Sharma & She and Naveen Kasturia in a still from Man to Man (Source: Instagram | @adah_ki_adah)

Hindi cinema has evolved massively in the past couple of years and there has been a surge of content-driven movies that addressed issues that are usually not talked about in films or society in general. Be it a Vicky Donor about a sperm donor, or a Badhaai Ho about a slightly old couple’s uncalled for pregnancy, there have been films that have been successful in making the audiences uncomfortable in a good way, and in the process entertained and made them think about it.

Adding to these films is Man to Man, a film starring Adah Sharma and Naveen Kasturia that addresses a topic most are not comfortable even giving a thought to. The film, directed and written by Abir Sengupta, talks about the idea of sex reassignment surgery.

Here is an exclusive look at Adah and Naveen in the film:

Adah Sharma & Naveen Kasturia in an exclusive still from 'Man to Man'

The film revolves around the characters of Rhea and Naveen. Naveen falls in love with her and they get married only to later realise that Adah was previously a man who got a sex reassignment surgery done to become the person she is now. Oh, man! Yeah, now that’s one really intriguing story talking about a profound subject. We cannot wait to see how the filmmaker has addressed this topic and are hope this film will encourage people to have discussions and be aware of something like sex reassignment surgery.

Adah was last seen in the film Commando 2 with Vidyut Jamwal. She has also done quite a few films in the Telugu industry. Naveen Kasturia, on the other hand, has appeared in a series of web series and short films like TVF pitchers and Bose: Dead or Alive. They seem like some interesting people to look out for. We are really excited about this movie, what about you guys? Tell us in the comments below.

Taimur Ali Khan

Taimur Ali Khan has, by now, earned the title of the Internet’s favourite child! Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s two-year-old son is the paparazzi’s favourite person to click and any opportunity they get – at his playschool, outside his house or basically anywhere – they make sure to pap him. And, we aren’t complaining. His adorable face makes our day each time. Taimur also seems to like all the attention he receives and has even been seen talking to the paps and waving at them.

Recently, Saif revealed how Taimur has taken to this paparazzi culture and it is the sweetest thing ever. In a recent interaction with Hindustan Times’ Brunch, Saif spoke about how Taimur had caught on to words like ‘media’ and ‘mediawale‘ and tries imitating the paps at home saying ‘khichik khichik’!

Here’s what Saif had to say:

Timtim is more media-savvy than either me or Bebo. He calls the photographers ‘Mediawale’. He thinks Mediawale is a name! One of his favourite games is to point my camera at people. He will say ‘khichik khichik khichik’ and pretend to be ‘Mediawale!

Aww, that is so sweet! We are sure the paparazzi would love to be snapped by Taimur. While the parents are not extremely strict with the media attention Taimur receives, they sure do want to give their two-year-old a normal childhood and they are quite concerned about the flash from all the cameras. Well, being parents, their concern is justified.

We can’t wait to see Taimur interact with the ‘Mediawale’ soon. Isn’t he just the cutest?!

Recently, the director of the film – Ayan Mukerji – joined Instagram to document his journey of making the fantasy drama. He posted many pictures of the pre-production stages and let his followers into the world of Brahmastra.

Just today, Ayan posted a video of Ranbir prepping for his role as Shiva in Berlin. He is seen training with Ido Portal – a movement trainer – who has been instrumental in shaping Ranbir’s performance in the film. Also seen in the video is Alia.

Watch the video here:

Ranbir is seen to be training hard for this role, and it looks really cool and interesting. The movement training is to help Ranbir in learning movements to show his character’s connection with the element of fire. The perfectionist that he is, we are sure RK will essay the role to the T! And how sweet is Alia, capturing boyfriend, Ranbir, training hard for the film.

The film is slated to release in the summer of 2020. Starring Ranbir and Alia opposite each other – this is a trilogy with the first film based on the subject of love. Kangana Ranaut has been in the news lately for her infamous statements about her fellow industry colleagues. The list including Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan among others. Her sister, Rangoli Chandel, is also very vocal on Twitter and makes sure to step up for her sister and her statements. The celebrities have responded to the sisters’ statements, too – some who took them on and some who preferred to remain neutral and not comment further. Ranbir, who was at an event recently, was asked about his reaction to Kangana’s accusations and he made a strong statement about it.

The Manikarnika actress accused Ranbir of not being vocal about his opinions on political issues in the country. Reacting to this statement, the Rockstar actor said that people can say whatever they want but he wasn’t interested in answering those questions.

Here’s what he said:

Whatever anyone’s asks me I do answer it. I don’t have any interest in giving answers to these questions. People can say whatever they want. I know who I am and what I say

Well, that is one way to nip the controversy in the bud. Let’s hope his reaction doesn’t spark further controversy. On the work front, Ranbir is going to be seen in Ayan Mukerji‘s next – Brahmastra – with Alia Bhatt. Kangana, on the other hand, will be seen next in Ekta Kapoor‘s film, Mental Hai Kya, opposite Rajkummar Rao.

Shahid’s rugged look and his role as the self-destructive and rebellious doctor in the film got everyone very excited about the film.

The trailer shows Kabir Singh (Shahid Kapoor) – a very intelligent doctor with anger management issues – on the path to complete self-destruction after he loses the love of his life, Preeti (Kiara Advani) to someone else in marriage. Shahid portrays the angry and depressed character with great vigour and passion, even his expressions in some scenes give us goosebumps.

Rani Mukerji in a still from Mardaani 2 (Source: Instagram | @yrf)

Rani Mukerji had delivered an outstanding performance as the fearless cop – Shivani Shivaji Roy – in the thriller, Mardaani.  Following the success of the film, the makers are now coming out with a sequel to it titled Mardaani 2. The cast and crew are on a month-long schedule in Rajasthan, bang in the middle of summer in the desert city. As for Rani, she has a lot of action-packed sequences to shoot during this schedule, and just shot for one chase sequence while it was a blazing 42 degrees!

A production source informs:

The temperature in Kota is over 40 degree now and in a few days, it will cross 43 degrees. It is an extremely difficult schedule, especially because we are shooting in the middle of the day during peak summer in Rajasthan. Most of the sequences are centred around Rani’s character’s investigation about the criminal. The chase sequence was shot on one of the hottest days in Kota.

Speaking further about the sequence, the source also mentioned that it was a lengthy one and that they wanted to wrap the shot in a single take, owing to the heat. They revealed that Rani does most scenes in one take and that this chase sequence wasn’t any different. They added that it was shot a couple of times anyway because Rani insisted it would be better to have variations of the shot.

The source also mentioned:

It was hot and we could see she was getting dehydrated, but she nailed each take. The shooting team is not used to this heat and Rani’s commitment really got the entire team going.

Rani will take her character from the prequel forward in Mardaani 2. Given the appreciation Tahir Raj Bhasin‘s character got for his negative role in the first film, there is a lot of anticipation about the villain in the sequel. The film marks the directorial debut of Gopi Puthran, the writer of  Mardaani. Produced by Aditya Chopra, this will be Rani’s next release after the critically acclaimed Hichki.

Only recently, we were introduced to the cast of Faraz Arif Ansari‘s upcoming film, Sheer Khurma. An LGBTQIA+ film, Sheer Khurma is set to see Divya Dutta and Swara Bhasker play a queer couple, with veteran actress Surekha Sikri playing a pivotal role. We now have news about the newest addition to the cast of the film, and it is the ex-Bigg Boss contestant, Priya Malik. Priya rose to fame during her stint on Bigg Boss 9. She is also the host of a show on TV9 Bharatvarsh called ‘Uncensored News with Priya Malik‘ where she discusses pertinent issues in the society.

Priya shares that she is elated about her Bollywood debut being an LGBTQIA+ film. As someone with a bold persona who is very vocal about her opinions, Priya will be a valuable addition to the cast of the film.

Here’s what she said:

I’m really pleased that my first film is a sensitive and thoughtful account of a queer love story traversing the path of acceptance. It’s a poignant script written by the director Faraz Arif Ansari. My character is small but this film is a big step for me in the right cinematic direction. Shoot begins next month and it will premier at festivals in India and abroad by early next year.

Maybe a small step, but definitely in the right direction. Good luck, Priya! Can’t wait to see more of you in the movies.

A film like Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga starring Sonam Kapoor started an important conversation about mainstream Bollywood cinema’s portrayal of LGBT & Queer stories and characters. After that, it is exciting to see more such movies being made. Can’t wait to catch this film soon.
